The David Livingstone Birthplace is a nationally significant site dedicated to the life and legacy of the Scottish explorer, missionary and abolitionist. Years of deterioration had left the museum buildings, displays and surrounding parkland in need of major restoration. The challenge was to conserve and upgrade the category A-Listed structures while enhancing the visitor experience—delivered within a tight charitable funding envelope and under the scrutiny of heritage conservation standards.

G&T provided Cost Management services, working closely with the David Livingstone Trust and project partners to manage budgetary risk throughout the restoration. We supported the project through funding applications, cost planning, procurement and contract administration. Our expertise ensured the project remained financially viable, balancing the needs of conservation, interpretation and accessibility across a diverse and sensitive estate.

The restored David Livingstone Birthplace is now a modern, engaging and accessible visitor destination that celebrates the complex legacy of one of Scotland’s most influential historical figures. The project has preserved the heritage fabric of the site while introducing new interpretive content and improved facilities for the public.
