Paradise
Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank is committed to carbon neutrality by 2050 as well as supporting sustainable development. They financed developer Bywater Properties, who are aligned with these commitments, to build a new six-storey office building that sets a benchmark for low carbon development, exceeding the RIBA 2030 Target at 491kg CO2e/m虏.
With a mass timber structure and glazed terracotta fa莽ade, the carbon locked in the frame is equivalent to c. 60 years of tenant emissions and sets a new standard for sustainable workspace. The timber used to build Paradise comes from sustainable forests and will have removed c.1,884 tonnes of carbon from the environment while growing to maturity.
The project was the Climate, Energy & Carbon winner in the 2021 World Architecture Festival Awards and the Working Category winner in the 2020 New London Awards.
