The Avenues Block C

Glasgow City Council identified the need for public realm improvements to rebalance traffic modes and introduce green and SMART infrastructure around George Square and its surrounding streets. The project places people at the heart of the vision and extensive public consultation is being undertaken to ensure that the needs of local people and visitors are embedded in the design strategy.

Once complete the improved streetscape within Glasgow city centre will increase connectivity, provide green infrastructure and enhance the space with high quality materials, planting and furniture that meets the aspirations of the community. The scheme will include additional cycle links and enhance pedestrian movement to improve George Square's position as the city's pre-eminent civic space.

Split into two phases, the first phase of public realm improvements involves George Square, North Hanover Street, Miller Street, John Street, Cochrane Street, West George Street and George Street up to Montrose Street. Phase 2 will follow and include St Vincent Street, St Vincent Place, Dundas Street, Dundas Lane and the eastern section of George Street.

Block C is one phase of the wider Avenues programme to transform the city centre’s streetscape and public realm. The programme is being funded as part of the Glasgow City Region City Deal, which funds major infrastructure projects across the city.
