The Burrell

The Burrell Collection

The Burrell Collection has undergone its most comprehensive modernisation since the museum opened to international acclaim in 1983. Improvements to the Category A-Listed building fabric were necessary to reduce its carbon footprint into an energy efficient, modern museum that enhances the visitor experience and safeguards it for the future.

Along with a new entrance, a central core encourages visitors to journey through the galleries and across all three levels of the building. Storerooms on the lower ground floor have been opened to the public for the first time, allowing the collection to feature important objects that have never been on permanent display.

Visitors also benefit from a new learning space and improved cafe and retail opportunities, while landscaped terraces link the museum with its parkland setting, providing a venue for events.

The Burrell Collection is recognised as one of Scotland’s finest post-war buildings. The collection itself consists of 9,000 works of fine and decorative arts spanning 6,000 years, including Chinese art, late Gothic and early Renaissance art.
