New Health and Science Building for Coventry University

Coventry University has opened its new flagship Science and Health Building (SHB) which extends the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences' state-of-the-art facilities for continuing education and professional development.

The £58.9m, five-storey 11,000m2 building in Coventry's city centre aims to inspire the next generation of Health and Life Science leaders through its dynamic exploration and simulation learning environment. The facilities encompass the entire ‘patient pathway’, from emergency response through to rehabilitation in the community, which will ensure students are employment-ready on graduation.

Facilities at SHB include 1,170m2 of interactive teaching labs and simulation areas with a full size ambulance, electronic bed head units, a 60m running track with analysis movement equipment and two community houses. The building has an atrium with collaborative working spaces, a café and an energy centre which will supply energy to a further four buildings on the University campus.

"Coventry University’s Health and Science Building is one of the first university super labs in the country and we were delighted to be part of the project team who delivered it."

G&T Partner, Katherine Clover

G&T cost manager Katherine Clover commented,

“Coventry University’s Health and Science Building is one of the first university super labs in the country and we were delighted to be part of the project team who delivered it. The building has a number of functions to fulfil so our priority was to understand the University’s requirements and then develop a robust budget to suit, with a number of options interrogated pre-contract. Active cost planning throughout ensured we procured the works and settled the final account within budget.”

Coventry University hosts three national Centres of Excellence in Teaching and Learning which has enabled it to invest substantial sums of money in health, design and mathematics. The new SHB is part of a vision to consolidate the University’s existing science laboratory and health simulation facilities into a new modern, multidisciplinary building that includes state-of-the-art healthcare simulation, research and ‘super-lab’ environments. It provides highly functional and flexible space which will adapt over time to meet the changing needs of the University.
