The Westminster Property Association’s (WPA) NextGen programme has adapted its spotlight event series in light of the current situation.

G&T was proud to become programme champion of the WPA NextGen initiative at the start of this year with a new Spotlight event series launched in January at the first event ‘in conversation with Olivia Harris, Chief Executive of Dolphin Living and Paul Williams, Chief Executive of Derwent London’ hosted by the NextGen. The Chair and Vice Chair of the NextGen committee, James Burrage from Great Portland Estates and Amanda Sheppard of Grosvenor, picked the brains of these senior leaders on advice from their career journeys and past experiences that helped pave the way to their current roles and leadership positions within the industry.

During lockdown, with physical events no longer able to take place, the WPA NextGen has taken to Zoom and the Spotlight series has continued virtually over the last few months. Events have included a roundtable on ‘The Future of Working in Westminster’ hosted by members of the WPA NextGen Committee and attended by G&T’s Kimberley Matthews alongside representatives from CBRE, British Land, Grosvenor and The Crown Estate and a discussion on what ‘Good Growth’ will mean within the built environment planned for the near future.

Members of the NextGen committee also hosted a virtual Q&A with a few of the WPA senior board, picking their brains on Central London’s response to the pandemic and asking key questions on the future adaptions that might need to be made in the capital to accommodate the quickly changing landscape.

The WPA’s programme of activity continues to deliver valuable insights in spite of lockdown, with virtual panel discussions, roundtables and interviews taking place over video calls and being published as podcasts and webinars.

The latest webinar explored Westminster City Council’s ambitions for London’s West End as it prepares for the arrival of Crossrail amidst the COVID-19 crisis. This discussion included an update on the £250m plan to transform the Oxford Street District, ensuring it is ready and able to adapt to a rapidly changing retail landscape which has been hit particularly hard by restrictions on movement. The audience heard from James Cooksey, Director of Central London at The Crown Estate, Stuart Love, Chief Executive of Westminster City Council, Katherine Russell, Head of Real Estate, Planning, Policy and Commercial at John Lewis & Partners and Mark Wild, Chief Executive of Crossrail.

G&T has been a member of the for many years, working with leaders from across the built environment to shape the future of property and construction in Westminster. We were proud to be named as programme champions of the WPA NextGen initiative at the beginning of this year and look forward to the future opportunities this collaboration will bring.

The WPA brings together property owners, developers, occupiers and professional advisors to inform policy makers and promote the importance of the built environment in Westminster, representing members’ views to Westminster planners and key London bodies.
