Construction is underway for Cockpit's transformation of its maker space in Creekside, Deptford.  The designs by young architecture practice Cooke Fawcett include a dramatic opening-up of the existing building to create public spaces at ground floor.

Funded by The Mayor of London's Good Growth Fund, the Stride Partnership and Lewisham Council, the project will broaden opportunities for the public to enjoy what Cockpit has to offer whilst also enabling makers to expand their practice into education, participation and events.

"This will see an exciting transformation of Cockpit Deptford from a relatively self-contained organisation into a vibrant community hub on Deptford's Creekside."

Annie Warburton

CEO, Cockpit

G&T is providing Cost Management services alongside New Stages (project manager), Planning Lab (planning consultant), Max Fordham (M&E and lighting), Momentum (structure) and Jane Simpson (access).

Cockpit is London's leading centre for craft and is currently home to more than 60 makers and micro-businesses. The remodelled building and site will accommodate an additional 21 businesses and support 26 new jobs.

Annie Warburton, CEO of Cockpit said: "This will see an exciting transformation of Cockpit Deptford from a relatively self-contained organisation into a vibrant community hub on Deptford's Creekside. Our vision is to build a thriving centre for craft and making, providing affordable studios, expert business support, local jobs and a rich programme of workshops, exhibitions and events. We look forward to the launch of our newly-transformed site in September 2023, and the years that lie ahead where we see the careers of future makers made at Cockpit."
